Plenert had attended a funeral on Saturday, presumably that of Mrs. J. J. Just, and while at the church suffered a stroke of paralysis and soon thereafter became unconscious. According to a recent announcement, the funeral services are to be held at the Johannestal church on Friday. A son, Rev. 			REV. JOHN PLENERT, was born Nov 17, 1864, at Neuhoff, Deutsch Kassen, Poland. At the age of 14, he was baptized on his confession of faith by Elder Henry Bartel and received into the church there. When 15 years of age, he came with his parents, Cornelius and Anna Bartel Plenert, brothers and sisters to America, and settled northeast of Hillsboro, Kansas. He had very little opportunity to get an education himself, but he did all he could to make it possible for his children to do so.

			On Nov. 7, 1886, he was united in marriage with the now deeply bereaved, Emelia Ratslaff, and for about 51 years, the couple shared joys and sorrows together. Their union was blessed with 14 children, four of whom, three daughters and one son, preceded the father into the great beyond.

			He was anxiously concerned to lead his children to Christ, at an early age. In this he succeeded, for they accepted Christ, were baptized and received into the church by their father.

			From youth up he was a willing worker in the Sunday School and other church activities. Accordingly, when he was 29 years old, on the first of May 1892, he was elected deacon in the 2nd Johannestal Church, and on December 3, 1893, its minister.

			When Elder John Bartel moved to South Dakota, leaving the church without an Elder, Bro. Plenert was chosen for this office. He found it difficult to make up his mind to accept this added responsibility. But after two years of study in the Word of God and much prayer, he was finally led to accept the charge and on March 18, 1899, was ordained to the office of Elder by the brethren, J. S. Hirschler and J. E. Baer. In 1905, when the first and second Johannestal churches united, he became Elder of this newly formed church and for about 38 years served this congregation in this capacity.

			He loved to work with young people, always endeavoring to see their point of view and to understand their problems. He loved to teach the Catechetical classes, finding here special opportunity to speak to the hearts of the young people. Many times he made
			the remark that these were some of his most blessed moments, although he realized that they were also fraught with grave responsibility. He had the privilege of instructing, baptizing, and receiving into the church more than 200 souls. This last May 30, 1937, he received 8 souls into the church through baptism.

			He enjoyed good health until about three years ago, when he was suddenly seized with a heart affection, from which, however, he recovered again sufficiently so that he could be up and around. However, it was necessary for him gradually to give up his work, though still ready to assist in any way his strength permitted. When the Lord called him, He called him from his work.

			It had been his and Sister Plenert's cherished hope that they might live to celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary together, and the Lord granted them their wish and the celebration took place Nov. 7, 1936. Then, too, it had been his hope and prayer to be permitted to live until the church would again have a leader. This, also, was granted him, when Bro. S. M. Musselman accepted the call from the church and was installed as Pastor and Elder, on August 1, 1937.

			At the funeral services of John Harms, Sept. 25, he had been asked to take part in the service and give a short sermon. This he endeavored to do, with the help of God. He had spoken about ten minutes from the text, “What is man that thou art mindful of him,' when he suffered a stroke of apoplexy. His last words were, “But I have to quit.” Shortly afterwards, he fell into a deep sleep, out of which he never awoke again on this earth. His release came quietly at 1:45 Sunday morning, Sept. 20. He brought his age to 72 years, 10 months and 9 days.

			He leaves to treasure his memory, his deeply bereaved wife, 7 sons and daughters, 7 daughters-in-law, 2 sons-in-law, 24 grandchildren, 2 sisters and many friends and relatives. Funeral services were held Friday Oct. 1, 1937, at the Jahannestal [''sic''] Church. A tent was erected to accommodate the large number of people attending. The ministers of the neighboring churches, Rev. John Epp and Rev. Arnold Funk, spoke very fitting words in the German language, and Rev. Valentine Nickel of Yates Center, Kansas, gave a very comforting message in the English language. Preceding this, a private service was held in the church for the family, relatives, and members of the Johannestal church, at which the pastor, S. M. Musselman, spoke comforting words, based on 2 Kings 2:9-14 and Phil. 1:12. Interment was made at Johannestal cemetery.
