Ulrich Thierstein

Ulrich Thierstein, the son of Samuel and Katherina Thierstein, was born near Berne, Switzerland, March 1, 1869. In the spring of 1883 his parents with their family came to America and in the fall of 1885 settled on land east of Whitewater, Kan. Godly parents led the boy's ways into a Christian life and when a youth of sixteen he joined the Emmaus Mennonite church near Whitewater, of which he was a member at the time of his death.

March 8, 1900, he was married to Miss Emma Dyck of the home neighborhood. The young couple then moved onto a farm of their own. There one child, a daughter, was born to them. On March 25, 1911 death claimed the wife and mother. In due time the daughter married and a couple of years later left the father alone on the farm. In the fall of 1928 he suffered a stroke of paralysis. Enfeebled by this he went to stay with his daughter. Early last October his condition had become such that he had to be brought to the Bethel hospital for special care. There he quietly passed away at noon, Sunday, Jan 5. His demise was due to the hardening of the blood vessels and creeping paralysis.

He leaves behind to mourn his departure his daughter, Mrs. Ida Langley, her husband Arbie Langley and three grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Herman Klassen of Whitewater, two brothers, Christian Thierstein also of Whitewater and J. R. Thierstein of Bethel college.

Funeral services and burial were at the Emmaus church Tuesday afternoon.
