LUCIA KATHARINA SPERLING

Lucia Katharina Sperling of Winnipeg passed away Aug. 11. She was born July 6, 1899 to Friedrich and Katharina August in Riga, Latvia. Her father died before she was two, and as youngest child she cared for her mother until she died. During World War I she and her mother fled to Germany. During World War II she fled from Thorn, Germany. Her husband remained behind on duty, and she never heard from him again. In 1948 she came to Canada, where through hard work she again acquired a home. Later she received a German pension and helped her nieces and nephews. She had accepted the Lord at an early age and was baptized. In Winnipeg, she joined Elmwood MB Church, later transferring to Portage Ave. MB Church. The Lord answered her prayers and sustained her. She recorded her life storv on tape. Having no children of her own, she invited relatives to her house for Christmas and her birthday. She hoped to have a cataract operation this summer so that she could read again, but a specialist decided against it, and she died three days later. Predeceased by her husband, 9 sisters, 3 brothers, 6 nieces and 6 nephews, she is mourned by 4 nieces and 6 nephews. The funeral was Aug. 15 in Portage Ave. MB Church, with Albert Baerg and Abe Neufeld ministering.
