Amish Youth, 17, Drowns in Gravel Pit Near Berne

Berne, Ind. — A swimming excursion to an old gravel pit near hear by six Amish youths ended in tragedy when Noah H. Schwartz, 17, slipped into deep water and drowned.

The youth, who had lost a foot in a mower accident at the age of 9 and was unable to swim, was wading at the edge of the pond when he apparently lost his balance and fell from a ledge.

Two of his brothers, Emanuel and Samuel, along with Joe and Amos Schwartz and John Graver were swimming nearby, but their frantic efforts to save him were unsuccessful. The body was recovered about 90 minutes later.

The youth's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schwartz of rural Geneva.
