Jakob B. Schmidt, Sohn von Bernhard und Maria Heerfurth Schmidt ward am 6. Juli 1878 in Marion County, Kansas geboren. Als sein ältester Bruder starb mußte er bei der Farmarbeit helfen und konnte infolgedessen nicht so die Schule besuchen wie er gerne gewollt hätte in der Antioch Schule. Am 3. Juni 1900 ward er auf sein Bekenntnis von Aelt. Peter Balzer getauft und Glied der Alexanderwohl Gemeinde. Am 24. Mai 1908 heiratete er Helena Ens. Die glückliche Ehe wurde mit 3 Söhne und 3 Töchter gesegnet, wovon eine Tochter von 7 Jahren starb. Der Heimgerufene war bei guter Gesundheit bis 1941 als er durch Influenza geschwächt wurde. Ein plötzlicher Herzschlag verursachte seinen so unerwarteten Tod am 14. Mai 1945 um 5 Uhr nachmittags. Er wurde 66 J. 10 M. und 8 Tage alt und hinterläßt seine Gattin, Bernhard und Isaak Schmidt, Hillsboro, Kans.; Anna, Frau Nick Fehdrau, Buhler; Ernst Schmidt, Daggett, Calif.; einen Schwiegersohn, 2 Schwiergertöchter [sic Schwiegertöcher], 3 Enkel, 3 Brüder, 2 Schwestern und viele Freunde. — The family as well as relatives and friends of J. B. Schmidt of Hillsboro were grief-stricken at the discovery of his death which occurred while he was out working in the field on his farm last Monday afternoon. Mr. Schmidt was busy at haymaking and had gone out with a team and rack, evidently to bring a load of feed. Some time later the team returned with Mr. Schmidt's lifeless body on the rack. He had yet attended services at the Alexanderwohl church on Sunday morning, although he had not been in the best of health. It is thought that a heart attack was the cause of his death. His wife and several children survive. The time for the funeral services, which will take place at the Alexanderwohl church, has not yet been annonced [sic].

JACOB B. SCHMIDT

Jacob B. Schmidt, son of Bernhard and Maria Hartford Schmidt, was born July 6, 1878, in Marion County, Kansas. After his older brother died he had to help much with the farm work and consequently his educational opportunities were limited. He received his public school training in the Antioch school.

He was baptized upon confession of faith in his Redeemer on June 3, 1900, by Elder Peter Balzer and united with the Alexanderwohl Mennonite church, of which he remained a faithful member until his death.

He was married to Helena Ens on on May 24, 1908. They were permitted to share life's joys and sorrows for 36 years, 11 months and 20 days. To this union were born three sons and three daughters, of whom the youngest daughter passed away at the age of seven years. Her passing was a great sorrow to him.

He was a loving husband and father, always willing to help others and was concerned about the welfare of his family.

He has been a farmer all his life and lived in Marion county all this time. He enjoyed good health up to 1941, when he had the influenza which weakened his heart. He suffered repeated heart attacks during the last few years and his end came unexpectedly and suddenly, May 14, 1945, at 5;00 P. M. He reached the age of 66 years, 10 months and 8 days.

The departed leaves to morn [sic] his sudden departure, his wife, Mrs. Helena Schmidt; Ben, of the home; Isaac, Hillsboro; Eva, of the home; Anna, Mrs. Nick Fehdrau, Buhler; and Technical Sgt. Ernest Schmidt, Dagget, California; one son-in-law, two daughter's in law, three grandchildren, three brothers, two sisters, six brothers-in-law and a host of relatives and friends.

The departed had great joy in his grandchildren, for he was a great lover of children.

One daughter, one grandchild, three sisters and two brothers preceded him in death.

Funeral services were conducted on Friday afternoon by the pastor of the church Rev. P. A. Wedel and assisted by Rev. C. C. Wedel. Rev. H. B. Schmidt gave a brief message at the graveside.

Jacob B. Schmidt, son of Bernhard and Maria Heerfurth [sic Herrfort] Schmidt, was born July 6, 1878, in Marion County, Kansas. In 1900 he became a member of the Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church after having been baptized by Elder Peter Balzer. In 1908 he married Helena Ens with whom he shared life for nearly thirty-seven years. The end of this life came on may 14, 1945.
