— Newton's first fatal traffic accident in more than a year and a half occurred Friday night, Jan. 7, on North Main street, claiming the life of 22-year-old Henry H. Rodgers. The young man was a passenger in a northbound car driven by Ronald Berger, 25, when it caromed off a car waiting to make a left turn and into the path of a southbound car driven by Dale Bontrager, 19, of Hesston. The accident took place near the Sand Creek bridge of the entrance to Larry's Refreshment Inn. The Bontrager youth and his companion, Julie Unruh, 18, of Newton escaped with minor injuries while Berger sustained a fractured shoulder. The Rodgers youth, son of Mr. and Mrs Leonard L. Rodgers, died of a broken neck. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Church of the Brethren and burial was made in the Pennsylvania cemetery near Zimmerdale.
