Doctor Served Over Half Century

Altona, Manitoba. — Funeral services were held at the Bergthaler Mennonite Church in Plum Coulee on March 12 for Dr. Hugh McGavin, 83-year-old retired physician who had served the residents of Plum Coulee and surrounding area for 55 years. Rev. James Flemming of Wallaceburg, Ont. officiated.

Dr. McGavin died at his home in Plum Coulee on March 8, having retired from active practice more than a year ago. A native of Paisley, Ont., he took up the practice of medicine at Plum Coulee in 1902 in horse and buggy days. He estimated he had delivered 5,000 babies.

In 1948 residents of Plum Coulee and surrounding areas held a “Dr. McGavin Day” in his honor when hundreds of his “babies” took part in a parade.
