JACOB LOHRENTZ

Jacob R. Lohrentz, son of Rev. Peter and Katharina Regier Lohrentz, was born on March 13, 1891, at Moundridge, Kans.

He received his boyhood education at the Berlin School near Moundridge and later studied for two short periods of time at Kansas State University, Manhattan.

On July 18, 1920, he was baptized upon the confession of faith in Jesus Christ by Rev. A. M. Martens, and became a member of the Hebron Mennonite Church, Buhler, Kan., where he remained a member until his departure from this life.

Jacob Lohrentz enjoyed the outdoor life of a farmer. He lived on the “home place” until Jan. 16, 1956, when he was united in marriage to Carrie Mae Barrett in a chapel wedding at the Christian Church in Springfield, Mo. The 14 years which Jacob and Carrie were privileged to share together were lived in Newton, Kan. from 1956-60, in Hesston, Kan. 1960-69, and since February of 1969 at the Friendly Acres Home in Newton, where Jacob passed to his eternal home.

ln addition to being a farmer, Jacob Lohrentz enjoyed life as a general handy man, carpenter, machinist, and electrician. He would often be seen working in his shop late at night. His love for the outdoors took him into the garden to groom the flowers and the fruit trees. His interest in the finer expressions of life was evident by his love for music. He enjoyed playing his saxophone in the band and received a great deal of pleasure from listening to classical and religious music.

After experiencing periods of failing health since 1963 and living through moments of serious illness during the last year and a half, Jacob R. Lohrentz passed to his eternal home on Sept 3, 1970, having attained the age of 79 years, five months and 21 days. He leaves his widow Carrie; three stepchildren, Mrs. Jacob C. Schenck and family of St. Louis, Mo., David Harold Dyer and family of Charleston, Mo., and Marian A. Rockenbrodt and family of Waterloo, Iowa; eight step-grandchildren, three of whom are married, and three step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Anna R. Lohrentz of Hesston, and Mary R. Lohrentz of Canton, Kan.; two brothers, Peter R. and wife Emma of Moundridge, Kan. and John A. Lohrentz and wife Susie of Newton; three nephews and two nieces and their families.

Having departed from this earthly life, Jacob Lohrentz would have us remember these words from Psalm 92, words which were among the last which our departed brother heard. “It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praises to thy name, O Most High; to declare thy steadfast love in the morning and thy faithfulness by night….For thou, O Lord, hast made me glad by thy work; at the work of thy hands I sing for joy.”
