MRS. SALOME HOSTETLER

Salome (Slabach) Hostetler daughter of John and Elizabeth (Schrock) Slabach, was born near LaGrange, Ind. April 11, 1869, and passed away at her home at Harper, Kansas June 29, 1954, at the age of 85 years, two months and 18 days.

At the age of eleven she moved with her parents from Indiana to Milford, Neb. Two years later the family moved from Nebraska to McPherson county, Kansas, making the trip with a team and wagon which contained most of their personal belongings.

In her youth she professed the Christian faith and became a member of the Mennonite church

On Oct. 25, 1888, she was united in marriage to Henry E. Hostetler. To this union, extending for more than 63 years, there were born 14 children, 7 boys and 7 girls. Six of the sons, Oliver, Ura, Titus Amra, Chancey, and Leo, live in the Harper area. Pius lives at Everest, Kansas. The daughters are Ida (Mrs. Harold Sommerfeld), Hesston, Kansas; Florence (Mrs. Ernest Detweiler), Harper Kansas; Stella (Mrs. Gideon G, Yoder), Hesston, Kansas; and Juanita (Mrs. Titus, Ramer), Polson, Mont.

Her husband preceded her in death on Jan. 2, 1952. Three daughters, Eva, Gladys, and Elsie (Mrs. Christ. Beyler), also preceded her in death. In addition to the eleven sons and daughters she leaves a heritage of 48 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren. She also leaves one sister, Mrs. Jemima Zimmerman of Inman, Kansas and one brother, John Slabach of Emporia, Kansas.

In 1908 she with her husband and family moved from McPherson county, Kansas to Protection, Kansas. In 1909 the family moved from Protection to Harper, Kansas where both Mr. and Mrs. Hostetler resided until their deaths.

Mrs. Hostetler lived a long and useful life, always serving her family, church and community to the best of her ability. During the many years that her husband served the Pleasant Valley congregation as deacon she entertained many guests in the home. These guests were always made to feel welcome. She was regular in her attendance at both the Sunday school and church services. In recent years when her health was impaired she still made every effort to attend the services of the church. During times of illness she maintained her same pleasant disposition, appreciating the efforts that were made to make her more comfortable.

The passing of Mrs. Hostetler brings to a close a pioneer home that has made a significant contribution to several Kansas communities.

“Just one life, ‘twill soon be past. Only what's done for Christ will last."

Funeral services were held Friday, July 2, at Pleasant Valley Mennonite church, with Bro. Waldo Miller officiating, and Bro. R. M. Weaver assisting.
