Steinbach Infant Dies in New York Hospital
Steinbach, Man. — Allan Hiebert, infant son of Paul and Susan Hiebert, died at Sloan Kettering Hospital in New York on May 15 of complications following a successful bone marrow transplant several months ago.
The infant was born with a deficiency in white blood cells known as severe combined immune deficiency syndrome (SCIDS). Funeral services for the boy were held on the day he would have been 11 months old.
He had captured the hearts of people in southeast Manitoba when a fund-raising campaign organized by Steinbach Pizza Place exceeded $17,000.
