Mother of Two Dies, Three Injured in Indiana Accident

Goshen, Ind. — A head-on crash on US-20 near Middlebury Sunday afternoon, March 23, claimed the life of a Topeka woman and sent her husband and son to the hospital with serious injuries.

Mrs. Joseph Gingerich, 48, died 24 hours later in the Elkhart hospital. Funeral services were held Thursday, march 27, at the Maple Grove Mennonite church, Topeka. Rev. Joe Swartz, the pastor, and Rev. Abe Peters officiated.

Mr. Gingerich, 54, suffered fractures of a hip and the lower back and multiple lacerations. Bruce D. Sharick, 17, of Shipshewana, driver of a truck that collided with the Kauffman [sic Gingerich] auto, was hospitalized but is recovering.

Officers reported that the truck driven by Sharick veered off the right side of the highway and then crossed the centerline and hit the oncoming Kauffman [sic Gingerich] car. Sharick's passenger, Michael P. Troyer, 17, escaped with minor injuries.

Besides her husband and son, Mrs. Kauffman [sic Gingerich] leaves another son, Harold, of Topeka; her mother, Mrs. Martha Eicher of Albany, Ore.; and two brothers, C. Sam Eicher of Albany and Duane Eicher of Downey, Calif.
