ANOTHER EUROPEAN MONARCH ANSWERS DEATH'S SUMMONS

KING Christian X of Denmark passed away on April 20 at the age of 76, after a reign of 35 years, and was immediately succeeded by his 48-year-old son, Crown Prince Frederick IX. The aged ruler died of heart failure after an illness of 15 days.

During Christian's reign Iceland, prior to that time a Danish dependency, became in 1918 a sovereign state united with Denmark under the crown. Subsequently Iceland became entirely independent. Earlier in Christian's custodianship, Denmark sold the Virgin Islands int eh West Indies to the United States for $25,000,000.

The towering, 6-foot 7-inch Christian was born at Charlottenborg on Sept. 26, 1879, and succeeded his father, King Fredrick [sic Frederick] VIII, on the throne May 12, 1912.
