text of obituary:
PETER J. AMSTUTZ
Peter J., son of John J. and Marian Oberly Amstutz, was born in Sugar Creek township, Wayne county, Ohio, April 13, 1873. He suddenly departed this life May 4, 1953, aged 80 years and 21 days.
In his youth he was baptized and became an active member of the Sonnenberg Mennonite church, later becoming a charter member of the Kidron Mennonite church, where he retained his membership to the end. He took active part in church work both as janitor and as a Sunday school teacher and even in old age was a faithful attendant at most of the Divine services.
On March 21, 1895, he was united in marriage with Barbara Schneck, and together they shared the joys and sorrows of life for over 58 years. To this union were born three sons and six daughters: Fairy (Mrs. Grover C. Gerber) Orrville, R. D.; Nettie (Mrs. Levi Nussbaum) also of Orrville, R. D.; Celia, who departed this life in 1906; Paul of Orrville, R. D.; Persis (Mrs. Ames J. Nussbaum) of Dalton, R. D.; Ira, of Orville, R. D.; H. Clair, of Goshen, Indiana; Frieda (Mrs. George C. Amstutz) of Dalton, R. D.; and Verda (Mrs. Ivan Zuercher) of Orrville.
Surviving are his faithful companion, eight children, 38 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. One child and three grandchildren preceded him in death. He was the sole survivor of his father’s family, his sisters and a brother having preceded him; namely: Elizabeth, (Mrs. Fred Keiner), Sarah, (Mrs. Christian Zimmerly), Magdalena, (Mrs. Simeon Lehman), Verena, (Mrs. Caleb Steiner) Dinah, (Mrs. Elias Augsburger) and Sem, who died in infancy.
His passing was sudden but he lived a full life in patience and faith. His family and friends sorrow at his passing but rejoice in memory of him and in the knowledge that he has gone to a land where there is neither pain nor sorrow.
Funeral services were held at the Desvoignes funeral home and the Kidron Mennonite church on May 6. Officiating at the services were his pastors, Reuben Hofstetter, Allen Bixler and Isaac Zuercher. Burial was made in the church cemetery.
