<center>✝ '''Skizze von Prediger Christian Schowalter''' ✝</center>

Liebe Botenleser!

November, 1828 in Affenheim, Rheinbayern, Deutschland.

&#8212; Ed.)
<center><h3>BIOGRAPHY OF REV. CHRISTIAN SHOWALTER</h3></center>
<center>'''Former minister of the Zion Mennonite Church of Donnellson, Ia.'''</center>
<center>By Jacob Schnebele</center>
Rev. Schowalter was born Nov. 11, 1828 in Assenheim, Bavaria, Germany. From his 6th to his 14th year he attended public school for 8 months a year, after which he worked on his father's farm a few years. In 1845, now being 17 years old he went to the school at Benggen, which he attended 2 years. After that he attended a normal school at Schiers, from where he graduated in 1849. He then taught school at Deutchhof in Bavaria. After this he received a call from a Mennonite school at Hayesville, O. He came to America in 1850 and taught school at Hayesville for 3 years, now being 22 years old. He then received a call from the Zion Mennonite church in Lee County Pa. [''sic'' Ia.], for teaching school. He arrived there on June 8, 1853 and on Aug. 2 the same year he began teaching school in this congregation. At this place, near Franklin, he was married with Rosina Haffner on Oct. 25, 1855. He taught the congregation school until overwork and failing health forced him to give it up. He was also chosen as minister for this church in 1861.

He commenced teaching in German and English both, but later he taught only in the German language. He taught in an old building which was formerly used as a stable, for about 2 years, until the first church for the Zion congregation was built. He then taught in the basement of this church until 1881. He taught all the branches which were then taught in the public schools besides giving religious instructions every day in some form or the other. He opened and closed each day with prayer, he taught the pupils to be orderly, honor older people, especially parents. After 1881 he taught school for about 7 more years in the new frame school house of the congregation. During all this time he omitted only 2 years when he was principal of the Wadsworth, O. College in 1868 and 1869. In the fall of 1869 he made a trip to Germany to see his old mother after which he returned to his congregation to serve them as minster and teacher. He began preaching on Christmas 1861 and was ordained to the full ministery [''sic''] the following year. He preached for about 42 years. He was one of the founders of the Mennonite Conference and was chosen for secretary almost at beginning, about 1861, and remained in this office until a few years before his death. When attending Conference in Pennsylvania in 1875 his oldest daughter Magdalena died after a short illness. As traveling was slow in those days, by the time he received the sad news it was impossible for him to return back home for the funeral. You can imagine the father's feeling when he arrived home. he also was a member of the foreign mission board and for many years was president of it.

He was greatly interested in the first movement for Sunday school and Christian Endeavor in his church and helped much to establish them.

He also served his fellowmen in a medical way, and often was called out in the night to give aid to some sufferer, without requesting any pay for his aid. He also wrote a German Catechism which was used for many years for religious instruction for baptism in Mennonite churches. He himself generally gave religious instructions for baptism about 2 or 3 times a week for about 6 months in the year.

The last years of his life he was a great sufferer from an incurable disease. Nearly 2 years prior to his death he had the pleasure to install his successor, Rev. Hilty, as minister.

On October 25, 1905, father and mother Schowalter had the pleasure to celebrate their golden wedding in the presence of all their living children, and the greatest part of the congregation. But on account of his suffering he could not enjoy this occasion as greatly as he and his family had wished. Nearly 1½ years after the golden wedding he was released from his suffering by our kind heavenly Father. He went to sleep as usual in the evening, never to wake up anymore on this earth, no one noticing the time of his departure. He reached the age of 78 years, 5 months, 4 days.

His faithful life-companion outlived hm about 10 years, being 80 years 9 months and 4 days old at the time of her death. They now abide in the heavenly mansions prepared by our heavenly Father for His children.

Father Schowalter was a man of great influence in his congregation and school. He is gone but by no means forgotten.
'''Reverend Christian Schowalter, a founder of the General Conference of Mennonite Churches of North America (shown above with his wife Mrs. Rosina Haffner Schowalter), has been remembered by friends who were his former pupils in school and members of his congregation at Donnellson, Iowa, with a $1,000 gift to the Bethel College Memorial Fund. A memorial biography (the fifth of a series) of Reverend Schowalter, pioneer pastor and conference organizer, is published in this issue of the Review.'''
<center>'''Rev. Christian Schowalter'''</center>
<center>'''A Memorial Biography'''</center>

It was in the time of the Reformation that the lives of three brothers living in Switzerland, John, Jacob, and Christian Schowalter, were in danger. Religious persecutions were spreading. The Schowalter brothers fled from their homes and found refuge in western Germany near the peasant village of Weissenburg, Alsatia. Here the trio became tenants on the manors of Schafbach and Gaisberg not far from the western bank of the strem made immortal in song and myth, the Rhine River.

One of these brothers, who went north into Germany from scenic Switzerland, was the ancestor of Christian Schowalter, early Mennonite educator in America, pastor, mission worker, and a founder of the General Conference of Mennonite churches.

<center>'''Born at Assenheim, Bavaria, Germany'''</center>

Born November 11, 1829, at Assenehim, Bavaria, Germany, young Christian Schowalter started gong to public school at the age of six years. When fourteen he went to work for three years on his father's farm. Although his parents, John and Magdalena Schowalter, had but moderate means they were eager that the studious boy should go on with his education and at seventeen he enrolled at a normal school in Beugen, studied here two years and continued his normal school training at Schiers in the canton of Graubeunden in eastern Switzerland.

Graduating at Schiers in July, 1849, he taught school for one year in Deutschhof, Bavaria. Receiving an invitation from Haysville, Ohio, to teach school there, Schowalter in 1850 in a company of seventy-two persons migrated to America.

<center>'''Taught in Ohio and at Donnellson Iowa'''</center>

He taught in Ohio three years and in 1853 went to teach a parochial school at Donnellson, Iowa. Here in Donnellson, Iowa, the young school teacher became acquainted with Rosina Haffner whom he married on October 25, 1855.

The pastor of the Mennonite Zion church at Donnellson died in 1861 and that same year Schowalter was chosen pastor of this church by lot. Beginning his pastorate in December 1861 Reverend Schowalter continued in the ministry for forty-three years.

He introduced the Sunday School in his church and was instrumental in interesting the young people of his congregation in music. This church was very active in supporting mission work and in 1897 when the Mennonite Mission Board arranged to send Phillip Rabbit, a Cheyenne Indian from Oklahoma, to attend Bethel College the members responded generously in giving money for the Indian's school expenses.

<center>'''Promoted Idea of Greater Church Unity'''</center>

In 1858 a movement for greater unity among Mennonite churches was begun. Schowalter, then a school teacher, was one of the promoters of the idea. Next year when a meeting was held to outline steps for such a unification, he was chosen as secretary. He became a member of the committee that drew up the constitution for the conference, was a member of the committee that prepared the Handbook for Ministers, and president of the Foreign Mission Board from 1896 to 1902.

The question of higher education for Mennonite youth came up in conference circles and Reverend Schowalter mapped out a course of instruction and principles on which a school could be conducted. His plans met with favor and on January 2, 1868, he was induced to become principal of the Wadswroth school, Wadsworth, Ohio, and was the first man ever to head a Mennonite institution of higher learning in America. He held this position nearly two years and at the end of his principalship visited Germany with his family.

<center>'''Observed Golden Wedding Anniversary'''</center>

In 1905 Reverend and Mrs. Schowalter celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary. Failing health two years later caused Reverend Schowalter to retire from the ministry and on April 13, 1907, passed away at the age of seventy-eight years.

Through his zeal and interest in Christian cooperation and organiztion, Reverend Schowalter will ong be remembered as furthering a closely-knit unity among Mennonite churches that today has grown into a General Conference in North America with a membership of 156 churches.

Friends who were members of Reverend Schowalter's church at Donnellson, iowa, attended school with him as their teacher; and who preformed [''sic''] the marriage ceremony for them, have made a memorial gift of $1000 to the Bethel College Memorial Fund in honor of this pioneer pastor, conference organizer, and teacher.
On April 13, near Donnellson, Iowa, Rev. Christian Schowalter passed to his heavenly reward, aged 78 years, 5 months and 1 day. The deceased was born in Assenheim, Germany. He came to America in 1850 and remained in the vicinity of Ashland, Ohio, until 1853, when he came to Lee Co., Iowa, and to his late home, where he has resided ever since excepting two years&mdash;from 1868 to 1870&mdash;when he was principal of the "Christliche Bildungsanstalt" at Wadsworth, Ohio. In 1855 he married Rosina Haffner, which union was blessed with fourteen children, six of whom preceded him to the land beyond. Bro. Schowalter had been pastor of the Zion Mennonite congregation for over 43 years, and a school teacher for 39 years. Two years ago he and his wife celebrated their golden wedding. He leaves to mourn his death, his wife, six sons and two daughters. The funeral services were held on April 16 at the Mennonite church near by his late home, conducted by Rev. P. P. Hilty, pastor of the church, and assisted by Rev. Fauth, and Rev. Musselman, of Wayland, Iowa, preaching in English. The funeral was the largest that was ever held there, two-thirds of those present being unable to gain entrance to the church. The floral offerings were numerous and beautiful. Interment was made in the church cemetery.

ELBING, KS &mdash; Martha Wedel, 91, of Newton, Kansas, died December 6, 2023, at Kansas Christian Home. She was born on November 28, 1932 to Frank and Mariechen Loewen in Dinuba, California. She had 2 older sisters; Mariechen who died in infancy, Melita, and a younger brother John. Mom grew up on a fruit farm and attended school in California.

On May 16, 1948 Martha was baptized by Rev. PK Regier upon her confession of faith, and became a member of the First Mennonite Church of Reedley, California. In February of 1955, Martha entered Mennonite Voluntary Service and served for 15 months at 3 different assignments. During her assignment at NIH in Bethesda, MD, she met her future husband, Wilmer Wedel and they were married on August 8, 1957 in Reedley.

After marriage they farmed with Wilmer's parents and brothers in Kansas, eventually moving onto the home place west of Burns where they farmed together with Uncle Clarence's family. They lived on the farm till dad's retirement in 2006 when they moved to Elbing, Kansas.

Martha joined the Zion Mennonite Church in Elbing and was an active member. She participated in Homebuilders, adult choir and Ladies Sextette. Mom was church historian for 13 years.

Martha enjoyed history and was very good at remembering names and dates. To keep all this information intact, she wrote 5 genealogy books, 4 for her parent's families, including her parent's immigration story. She also volunteered her time at the Kauffman Museum in North Newton for 9 years.

Mom was very talented. Besides singing, she loved to sew and when we kids were younger she sewed many of our clothes. Martha learned to crochet as a young girl and crocheted many beautiful projects with very fine thread until her arthritic hands could do it no more.

In 2013 Martha developed cancer and the treatments left her weakened so it was determined to move her to Kansas Christian home where she has lived for the last 10 years. These were some of the best years of her life. She enjoyed the apartment she had, the many friends she made, the nursing staff and most recently EnHabit Hospice which did a wonderful job of providing her happiness and comfort in her final months. EnHabit brought her a robotic cat which she treated as if it was real. The cat would respond to motion and purr or meow. It provided much enjoyment to her bringing her back to her cats on the farm. We give heartfelt thanks to Kansas Christian Home and Enhabit Hospice for the loving care they gave to mom especially in her final days. We are grateful for our home church, Zion Mennonite in Elbing, for keeping in contact with mom when she could no longer attend church.

Martha is survived by her children Nancy and Marvin Harms of Newton, Barb and Mike McGee of Wichita, and Brian and Julie Wedel of Moundridge, grandchildren Jana (Frank) Rodriguez, Laura Harms, Brett (Shannon) Harms, Sara Harms, Robert (Alexis) LaFave, Christann (James) Covey, Riley McGee, Collin Wedel, Kaylee (Nathan) Enns, Addison Wedel, great grandchildren Ian, Micah, Madelyn, Sophia and Abigail LaFave, Anaiah and Katelyn Covey, and Jedidiah and Gabriel Harms, sister's in law Thelma Wedel of Burns and Susan Loewen of Reedley, California, many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Martha is preceded in death by her parents, husband, sisters and brother.

Visitation is Sunday November 10, 2023 at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home in Newton from 1-5 pm, with family present from 3-5 pm. Graveside service is at 10:00 am at Zion Mennonite Cemetery rural Elbing with Celebration of Life Service at the Zion Mennonite Church in Elbing at 11:00 am.

Memorials are suggested to Zion Mennonite Church, EnHabit Hospice, or Kansas Christian Home, and may be left with the funeral home.
'''MARTHA WEDEL'''

Paul and Mary Rogalsky of Chilliwack, B.C.
passed away Jan. 5. Mary was born .June 25,
1904 to John and Mary Brandt in Wernersdorf, Russia. The oldest of 10 children, she
had a love for children and music. She accepted the Lord and was baptized during a
revival in 1923, joining the Allianz Church.
She sang, taught Sunday school and was active in youth group. In 1926 she married Paul
Rogalsky. Paul was born May 26, 1905 to
Paul and Aganetha Rogalsky in Schonfeld,
Russia. During the Revolution his father and
uncle were murdered and he was hunted by
rebels. Because he was unable to finish high
school, he could not fulfill his desire to
become a
teacher. He
became a Christian at 19 and was
baptized into the
Conference Mennonite Church.
Paul and Mary
escaped Russia in
1929. Their first
child died in a
refugee camp.
They settled
briefly in
Manitoba. In 1931
they moved to Saskatchewan. Here they had
a son who died in infancy and two daughters.
They farmed, and Paul was a beekeeper. He
was ordained to the ministry in 1944 in
Philadelphia MB Church, Watrous, Sask.
Both participated in many church activities.
In 1952 they moved to Chilliwack, where
Paul worked in building supplies. Both were
active in church. Mary especially enjoyed
singing. Paul's poor health, which included
many surgeries and a faulty heart, made life
difficult, but Mary's cheerfulness was a
source of strength. Her motto was "With the
Lord we can reach the goal-he has always
been faithful." In the past six months she
seemed to lose her cheerfulness, and the
family prayed that she could soon go to her
Lord. On .Jan. 3 they moved to Tabor Home,
Clearbrook, B.C. On Jan. 5 Mary died of an
apparent heart attack. Paul tried to assist her
and also had a heart attack. They passed into
eternity together after 63 years of marriage.
They are survived by their daughters Anne
Toews of Guernsey, Sask. and Eve Nicklin of
Williams Lake, B.C.; 6 grandchildren and 7
great-grandchildren. The funeral was .Jan. 10
in Broadway MB Church, Chilliwack, with
Robert Friesen ministering.
<center><h3>GORDON WALTER KLASSEN</h3></center>

Gordon Klassen passed away suddenly on September 15 at the age of 16 years. He was the beloved son of Walter and Bettie Klassen
of Winnipeg. Besides his parents he leaves to
mourn his early passing, his brother, Philip,
both grandmothers, and many uncles, aunts,
cousins and friends.

Gordon had suffered from asthma since he
was five years old, but was uncomplaining
and had learned to cope with his illness. He
enjoyed an active life and during the past
summer had taken a part-time job at a golf
club and worked in his father's business for
the first time. He had just begun his grade
11 at the River East Collegiate and was
enjoying his studies. Golfing, playing his
guitar, model building and reading were
some of the many hobbies he enjoyed. He
was a quiet boy, cheerful and had a real
sense of humour. He attended River East
Mennonite Brethren Church and enjoyed
assisting in operating the sound system
there. He was active in young people's and
had indicated his interest in baptism this
fall.

He will be deeply missed by his family and
friends, but they are comforted by the
knowledge that he is at home with the Lord.

<center><h3>REV. GIDEON G. YODER</h3></center>

Gideon G. Yoder, son of Abner G. and Mary Ellen (Gingerich) Yoder, was born at Parnell, Iowa, on Jan. 19, 1908; passed away at his home in Hesston. Kan. on Aug. 4, 1971, age 63.

He is survived by his wife, Stella; three sons, Russel of Kansas City, Kan., Galen of Washington, D.C., and John of the Bronx in New York City; two daughters, Ima Jeanne Yoder of Chicago, Ill. and Bonita at home; two brothers, Edwin of Wellman, Iowa, and Oren of Kalona, Iowa; one sister, Katie Yoder of Kalona, Iowa; and one grandchild, Russel Edward.

At the age of 12 he was baptized by Bishop J. K. Yoder at the West Union Mennonite Church in Iowa. Later, at the age of 18, he made a reconsecration of his life and decided upon a definite commitment to answer a call to the ministry and related church work.

He lived in Iowa until as a young man he moved to Crystal Springs, Kan., where he and Stella Hostetler were united in marriage on Aug. 30, 1936. He served as minister of the Crystal Springs Mennonite Church from March 20, 1937 to Sept. 1, 1951, except for a brief period of one year when he served as Civilian Public Service Camp Director at Dennison, Iowa. While serving at Crystal Springs he taught part-time at Hesston Academy and College from 1947 to 1951.

He was always interested in learning and furthering his education. His formal education included graduation from Hesston Junior College; and the degrees of A. B., Friends University; A.M., Phillips University; B.D., Goshen College Biblical Seminary; and a Th.M. from Princeton Theological Seminary.

In 1952 he and his family moved to Hesston where he served on the faculty of Hesston College as professor of Christian education and church history until 1964. He also served as the pastor of the Burrton Mennonite Church from Sept. 1, 1956 to Sept. 1, 1964.

In the fall of 1955 he served as the tour leader to Europe and the Near East for Menno Travel Service. He gave the Conrad Grebel Lectures in 1956. These lectures were published in the book, "The Nurture and Evangelism of Children," in 1959.

The family moved to Burrton, Kan. in 1963 for one year, and then moved to Wellman, Iowa in 1964 where he served as pastor of the Wellman Mennonite Church for three years. In 1967 they moved to Hutchinson, Kan. where he served as pastor of the Pershing Street Mennonite Church until 1969, when they moved to Hesston, Kan. Since 1969 he had been pastor of the Inter-Mennonite Fellowship in Hesston. He was also serving as chairman of the Hesston Ministerial Association.

He was always interested in the general welfare of the community and the world. He strived to solve conflicts and bring about peace, being a friend of young and old alike.

He was very sensitive to people's feelings and needs. His ministry was that of "the sympathetic ear." He touched lives that seemed unreachable to many. His openness to God brought him rewards that often caused him to remark, "I'm involved in the greatest work in the world."

<big>'''Mennonite Library and USA Archives - Bethel College, North Newton, Kansas<br /> biographical wiki'''</big>

This wiki contains obituary indexes to Mennonite periodicals and local newspapers. We envision this, in the long run, as a site to centralize much of our biographical reference information. We would like to eventually enter information such as the entries from the 1940s ''Who's Who among the Mennonites'', our personal photos collection (including maybe scans of photos), notes indicating persons whose papers are in the archives, GRANDMA reference codes and ID numbers.

The wiki is not open to general editing; only a limited number of editors have user IDs. You can [mailto:mla@bethelks.edu contact us] with comments and corrections. Our intention is that each person is represented by only one page in the wiki, so please also report duplicate pages/persons.

Obviously, not all of the people mentioned in this wiki are Mennonites. Our site contains much local history information that goes beyond Mennonite circles.

<center><h3>LEONHARD F. BARTEL</h3></center>

Leonhard F. Bartel, son of Leonhard and Aganetha Funk Bartel, passed away at the Salem Hospital. Hillsboro, Kans., on August 6, 1951, at the age of 63 years, 11 months and 20 days.

He was born on August 16, 1887, on a farm near Hillsboro, Kansas. At the age of 19 years, on September 6, 1906, he was baptized by Rev. J. S. Hirschler and united with the First Mennonite church in Hillsboro, where he has remained a faithful member and worker until his death.

In 1913 he left Kansas for Chinook, Montana where he homesteaded two years. Then he returned to be united in marriage with Emelia Schroeder on May 8, 1915. After their marriage they left for Montana to live on their homestead; however, in 1916 they returned to make their home on a farm near Hillsboro.

To this happy union four children were born: Norma, (Mrs. Theodore S. Klassen) of Newton: Lenora, (Mrs. Abe E. Neufeld) of Inman; Betty (Mrs. Kenneth C. Jost) of Oklahoma City; and Carl, who has just returned from serving with the U.S. Navy.

We shall always remember him as a kind and loving husband and father, and a faithful and tireless worker at his occupation.

During his life he has always shown an unselfish devotion towards the church and has proven this to us by his active participation in church work, serving the church as deacon for several terms.

He leaves to mourn his departure his wife Emelia, four children, three sons-in-law, one daughter-in-law, four grandcildren [''sic''], four brothers, Albert, Heinrich, Peter and Jacob, and a host of relatives and friends. — The family.
