Goshen, Ind. — Three young people were fatally injured in two separate traffic accidents near here Friday evening, Oct. 1, and early Saturday. Five other youths were injured, none seriously.

A two-car crash south of Goshen on Friday evening claimed the lives of Janet R. Toevs, 21, of Whitewater, Kan. and JoAnna Mae Steckley, 20, of Harrisonburg, Va. Miss Toevs died at the scene and Miss Steckley died in the hospital on Sunday.

An accident on US-33 northwest of here at 12:09 a.m. Saturday claimed the life of Michael W. Yoder, 17-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Yoder of Elkhart.

The two young women had attended a wedding rehearsal at a church near Goshen the evening of the fatal accident. Miss Toevs was to sing a solo at the Saturday wedding, and Miss Steckley was to be a bridesmaid. They had just left the church in Miss Toevs' small foreign car when it was hit broadside at Kerchers Corners.

Miss Toevs, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Toevs of Route 1, Whitewater, and a graduate of Hesston College, had recently completed a term of voluntary service in Chicago. She was employed in the library on the Chicago campus of the University of Illinois and assisted in inner city work. She had moved to the Reba Place Fellowship in Evanston and was continuing her work in Chicago.

In the other accident, five students at Concord High School were en route home in a Volkswagen van with Michael Yoder as driver when the vehicle was struck from behind by a car driven by a Mishawaka youth. The van overturned and all were thrown out. Michael died en route to the hospital.

His passengers, all of whom were released after treatment at the hospital, were Timothy L. Classen 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Classen; Frieda and Anita Beth Klassen, daughters of Dr. Otto Klassen; and Gayle Herrli, 16, daughter of Glen E. Herrli. All are of the Elkhart area.

Michael was a senior at Concord, here he was an athlete and member of the National Honor Society. His funeral was held Monday forenoon at the College Mennonite Church, with Rev. John Mosemann and Rev. J. Robert Detweiler officiating.

*            *            *

Funeral services for Janet Toevs were held Tuesday morning at the Emmaus Mennonite Church near Whitewater, with Rev. L. R. Amstutz in charge. Lowell Byler of the Hesston College faculty sang at the service. The Toevs' son, Paul, was killed in a motor bike accident four years ago. Another son, James, of the home survives, along with the parents.

ISAAC B. FAST

Isaac B. Fast, son of Isaac and Susanna Wedel Fast, was born on Feb. 16, 1884, near Goessel, Kan. He received his education in the Gordon School and Bethel College Academy from which he graduated in 1909. After attending the Marion County Teachers Institute, he received his teaching certificate. He taught in the following grade schools: Berlin, Good Hope, Steinbach, Emmenthal, and Gordon, a total of seven years.

He was baptized on May 31, 1903, by Rev. Peter Balzer and became a member of the Alexanderwohl Church. On June 10, 1920, when the Goessel Mennonite Church was founded, he became one of its charter members.

On June 17, 1915, he was united in marriage to Aganetha Unruh.

In June, 1924, he was ordained as a deacon in the Goessel Mennonite Church. The work of the church was always very dear to him. His interest in missions, education, and relief were evidenced by his prayerful and material support. During his younger years he gladly served as Sunday school teacher, instructor of the catechism class, Sunday school superintendent, and for over 30 years as a director of the Bethesda Hospital and Home.

When the Goessel Church decided to sponsor a refugee family from Europe, he immediately gave his full support to this effort, and one of the highlights of his life was to have a part in assisting the Johann Horn family in establishing a new home in this country.

In January 1971 he suffered from a light stroke and a severe gallstone attack and for a time he was bedfast and the frailties of old age were very much in evidence. Visits with friends and relatives and the pastor gave him much joy and comfort. He found peace in prayer and Bible verses such as John 16:33, "Be of good cheer. I have overcome the world."

In the more recent months there seemed to be a renewing of physical strength and vitality, but on the morning of Oct. 16 the Lord suddenly called him from this life at the age of 87 years and eight months.

He was preceded in death by a brother Peter. Those who remain to cherish his memory besides his wife are Menno and wife Naomi of Lincoln, Neb.; Selma and husband Milton Schmidt of Walton; Martha and husband Homer Waltner of Freeman, S. D.; one sister, Mrs. Anna Voth; four sisters-in-law: Mrs. Lena Fast, Mrs. Susie Unruh, Mrs. Katie Schmidt, and Miss Mary Unruh; and six grandchildren.

As children we are grateful to have had a father who pointed us to a life rich toward God and our fellowmen. His companionship meant much to us and we look forward to meeting him where there is no shadow of parting and we shall be forever with the Lord.—The Family.

RUDOLF HORSCH SR.

Rudolf Horsch was born on June 19, 1889 to Heinrich and Lisette Funk Horsch in Hemmersheim, Bavaria (Bayern), Germany. Here he received his elementary and secondary training. His mother died when he was but 11 years old and his father died six years later. Uncle Heinrich Landes accepted him into his family until he came to the United States in 1911 at the age of 22. He came to Aberdeen, Idaho because two of his sisters were already living here.

Before coming to the U.S. he had been engaged to Lisel Rullman. She joined him the following year and were married March 9, 1912 in the Emmanuel Mennonite Church, also known as the Homestead Church, by Christian Hege.

He was baptized upon confession of faith in Jesus Christ as his Savior in 1904 by Rev. Christian Husinger. Herre in the U.S. they attended the Emmanuel Mennonite Church and in February of 1930 joined the First Mennonite Church of Aberdeen. Mr. Horsch was an active Christian regular in church attendance and served as a Sunday school teacher for many years and as deacon for eight years. His faithful witness was reflected in his simple, honest, consistent life.

Farming was the means of earning a livelihood which they sought on homestead land. Economically this proved to be unsuccessful. They then purchased land southeast of Aberdeen that could be irrigated. Here they lived until their retirement in 1950 when they moved to Aberdeen.

He enjoyed good health until recently. He was admitted to the Power County Hospital Sept. 23 and went to be with the Lord Oct. 8, 1971, having reached the age of 82 years.

Those remaining to cherish the memory of his life are his wife; their five children and families, Walter and wife, Agnes of American Falls, Idaho, Rudolph and wife Caroline of Rt. 1, Aberdeen, Elizabeth Merrill of Minneapolis, Minn., Paula and husband Carl Cleveland of Boise, Idaho, Albert and wife Shirley of Rt. 1, Aberdeen; 18 grandchildren; 12 step-grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Henry of Reedley, Calif. and Gotthilf of Bavaria Germany; four sisters, Paul Schmutz of Bavaria, Germany, Barbara Lichti of Reedley Calif., Elsie Lesky of Alhambra, Calif., and Frieda Froese of Spokane, Wash. and other relatives and friends. Two sisters and a brother preceded him in death.
He died Sept. 29 at a Salem hospital. Rev. Ted Fast and Rev. Allen R. Tschiegg officiated at the services.

REV. JOHN M. FRANZ

John Martin Franz was born near Mountain lake, Minn. on Oct. 5, 1884. After completing his elementary education in the district school, he attended the Mountain Lake Bible Academy from which he graduated in 1904 as a member of the first graduating class.

For a short period of time during 1908 he attended Wallace College in Berea, Ohio. He taught elementary school for four years near Mountain Lake. Following this, he completed a program of religious education for the Christina ministry at the Moody Bible Institute of Chicago, from which he graduated in 1912.

He continued to be a student of the Bible all his life. In June of this year he was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity by the Evangelical Bible School and Seminary of Chicago in a special ceremony at the Immanuel Mennonite Church, Pratum, Oregon.

Our father gave his heart to the Lord Jesus Christ and received Christian baptism from Elder H. H. Regier on July 8, 1906. He united with the Bethel Mennonite Church at Mountain Lake. In 1914 he was ordained as an evangelist by Elder David Toews at Rosthern, Sask. In 1917 he was ordained an elder by Elder Henry H. Regier at the Bethlehem Mennonite Church, Bloomfield, Mont.

For more than 50 years he was engaged in pastoral work. He served ten different churches beginning in Iberia, Mo., then Canada, Montana, Washington and Oregon. His longest pastoral stay was at the Immanuel Mennonite Church of Pratum, where he served 15 years. For two years he was the minister-at-large of the Pacific District Conference. The Lord used him in conducting evangelistic meetings in many churches throughout the span of his ministry.

On Oct. 11, 1908, he was married to Regina Hamm, who preceded him in death Feb. 7, 1968, after over 59 years of married life. Born to them were four sons, all living in Oregon. They are Rufus of Eugene, Edward and Landy, both of Salem, and Arthur of Lincoln City. He is survived by them and their families, namely 12 grandchildren and two great-granddaughters. Four brothers and two sisters also mourn his departure. They are Jacob, Peter and Samuel of Mountain Lake and Ferdinand of Los Angeles, Calif., Mrs. Elizabeth Linshied of San Diego, Calif. and Mrs. Frieda Royer of Arcadia, Calif. Our home and family has always been blessed by the experience of much love and affection to each member.

About the middle of July this year his health began to fail quite markedly. During his stay in the hospital and convalescent home he continued to exhibit great patience, gratefulness, and an unfailing trust in his Lord that He would "never fail him or forsake him." At his passing on Wednesday morning, Sept. 29, 1971, he attained the age of 87 years less six days.

The fellowship and communion with his Lord through prayer was characteristic of him throughout his lifetime. his favorite Bible verse was Matt. 6:33: "Seek ye first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you." In his own words he wrote, "I chose the ministry after my conversion to devote my life where it would count the most for the Lord Jesus Christ." It is our prayer that God will continue to multiply his ministry. — The Franz Family.

MRS. HILDA GOERING

Mrs. Hilda (Schwartz) Goering, daughter of Jacob and Fanny (Albrecht) Schwartz, was born July 13, 1905 at Pretty Prairie, Kan. She departed this life on Oct. 1, 1971 at the age of 66 years, two months and 17 days, following open heart surgery at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City.

She grew to young womanhood in the Pretty Prairie community where she attended grade school. She attended an academy in Hillsboro, Kan. for two terms.

She was baptized upon confession of faith in her Redeemer Jesus Christ on June 5, 1921 by Rev. J. B. Epp and became a member of the Pretty Prairie Mennonite Church.

She was married to Edwin J. Goering on April 22, 1928. The first 14 years of their married life were spent on a farm near Elyria, Kan. after which they moved to their present home near Pretty Prairie. They were permitted to share life's joys and sorrows for 42 and one-half years.

She leaves to mourn her departure her husband; one son, Curtis Eugene of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Fred (Virleen) Unruh of Regina, Sask. and Marlow (Janice) Unruh of Hesston, Kan.; six grandchildren; six brothers, Ed, Rudy, Pete, Henry, Herb and Art Schwartz; two sisters, Mrs. Ida Graber and Emma Schwartz, all of Pretty Prairie, and a host of relatives and friends. Preceding her in death were her parents, a brother and her eldest daughter, Betty.

She was a devoted wife and affectionate mother, always serving the Lord in a quiet way. With her gentle smile she showed us love in many ways and was always there with helping hands. Not only do we have the memories, but the great love she created. Now she is home with the Lord in his everlasting care.
