<center><h3>EDWARD LIESCH</h3></center>

Edward Liesch was born in Russia on January 4, 1893. He lived among us for 71 years, 8 months and 1 day, suddenly coming to the end of his pilgrimage on Saturday afternoon, September 5, 1964, in Bakersfield, California.

From Russia the Liesch family moved to Canada, residing temporarily in Winkler, Manitoba, later moving to Main Centre, Saskatchewan, where Ed was married to Minnie Harder on June 29, 1919. In 1921 Ed and Minnie moved to Bakersfield where they made their home until the present, and where he worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad Company for 38 years prior to retirement.

Edward and Minnie Liesch were blessed with three children, all of whom have married, and all of whom are Christians, serving the Lord. Six grandchildren have had the joy of knowing Grandpa Liesch as one who was loving and kind, and deeply concerned for the spiritual and total welfare of relatives, friends and neighbors.

Faith in Jesus Christ and conversion came to him at the age of 14. He set a commendable example of devotion to Christ; of worship in the home and in the church; of Bible study, knowledge and teaching of the Word; and of Christian stewardship of time, talent and means. He had a keen sense of humor to blend with deep convictions and a firm stand on what he believed to be right. Certainly he leaves this testimony "that he pleased God."

We will long remember him as having found great delight in the beauty of nature. He loved flowers, trees, and outdoor scenes, and loved to see them grow; in them he saw the handiwork of God as a confirmation of his faith, and to the glory of God.

Surviving the home going of their father are his wife, Minnie; his daughters, Mrs. Ruth Lingo and Elvera and husband Amos Kleinsasser; a son Arnold and his wife, Jean Liesch. He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Peter Wiebe and Mrs. Peter Epp; four brothers, David, Fred, Jake and Herman; and an elderly uncle, Ludwig Schaaek. Preceding him in death were his parents, Fred and Emilie Liesch; three brothers, Gus, Henry and Paul; two sisters, Olga Ewert, and baby Carolyn, and one son-in-law Doug Lingo.

Funeral services were held in the Bakersfield church with brethren John Friesen and P. Huebert serving with messages of comfort. Interment was in the Bakersfield cemetery.

Birth date: 1890 Jan 14

text of obituary:

<center><h3>AGNES (GOOSSEN) EPP</h3></center>

Our dear mother, Agnes (Goossen) Epp, was born on a farm at Marion, South Dakota, on January 14, 1890. Her parents, Rev. and Mrs. Henry A. Goossen emigrated to Canada in the spring of 1899, when Mother was nine years of age. The family settled on a homestead sixteen miles west of Rosthern, Saskatchewan, in what came to be known as the Salem community. She attended Springfield school unil her midteens, completing the course offered there.

During the great revival that swept the community in the spring and summer of 1905 both our parents came to a saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ, were baptised, and joined the Salem KMB church.

Our parents were married on March 10, 1907, and for about a year they lived on Father's homestead in the Great Deer area. In 1908 Father made a land trade, and our parents settled in their new home a mile east of Mother's childhood home. Here their five oldest children were born.

In the spring of 1916, obeying God's call, our parents left the farm to go to China as missionaries under the China Mennonite Mission Society, founded by Rev. H. C. Bartel. Their joint service there lasted six years. Owing to Mother's breakdown in health they returned to Canada in May of 1922 before the term was up. Mother was suffering from a complication of organic diseases, augmented by a nervous disorder. And though our parents hoped to return to the field after a year's furlough, the dream was never realised. By the time Mother had regained a measure of health, China's doors were closing. Three children had been born to them in China - Samuel, Matilda, and Albert - who died in infancy and was buried in the province of Shantung, China. Melvin, the youngest member, was born in Canada on the farm to which the family had returned.

On September 22, 1942, our father, always in robust health till then, died unexpectedly at the age of 57 after only six days of illness. With the help successively of three sons - Samuel, Melvin and Edward - Mother continued to run the home farm, four and a half miles north-west of Waldheim.

Two years ago this month we learned from the family doctor that Mother's old ailments, dormant for some years, had flared up, and that medical science knew no cure for the condition.

Shortly after the New Year, this year, she was admitted to the Saskatoon City hospital for tests and treatment - the first of three stays there.

In the last week in June she was readmitted to hospital for 2 1/2 weeks. Mother joined the family then for a succession of farewell gatherings when her oldest son, Jacob, and his family -her strongest remaining props - left for a new field of service in Hillsboro, Kansas, and the Sylvester Dirkses for their fourth term in Peru.

All of us felt this was likely to be our last family gathering with Mother present, yet we could not wish to detain our brother and sister - nor Mother, if God intended to call her higher. Sylvester voiced it for us all. "I'm not going to say goodby, Mother. I'll say goodnight here - and good morning up there!"

For a time after the actual wrench of parting was over, Mother's condition bettered slightly. But then it worsened sharply. In mid-September she was readmitted to hospital for the final time.

During the first two weeks in November she suffered intensely, lapsing at last, with the aid of sedations, into a state of unconsciousness. She came out of this abruptly on Friday, Nov. 13, and was more or less conscious, though not always rational, until the day of her death.

The closest family members, Henry, Selma, and Margaret, were called to her bedside, and were with her at the time of her death - as also was her sister, Mary (Mrs. J. B. Heppner) a post surgery patient in the same hospital. Mother had a very peaceful passage. She breathed her last at ten minutes to two in the afternoon of Tuesday, Nov. 17.

Mother attained the age of 74 years, 10 months and three days. Thirty-five and half years were shared with Father. She was widowed for twenty-two years, one month, and twenty-six days. Beside her husband, two children predeceased her - Albert in 1921 at the age of ten months, and Mary - Mrs. Albert Schmidt, then of Omaha, Nebraska - of a heart ailment in May of 1950, at the age of forty-one. Her oldest son-in-law, Albert Schmidt, too died very suddenly of a heart attack in early spring of 1956.

Mother is survived by two daughters, Margaret and Mathilda - Mrs. Sylvester Dirks, of Peru; five sons, J. H. Epp, of Hillsboro, Kansas, E. H. M. Epp, of Winkler, Man., H. H. Epp of Saskatoon, Sask., S. H. Epp, of Steinbach, Man., and Melvin, of Erwood, Sask.; three sisters, Mary (Mrs. J. B. Heppner) of Waldheim, Sask., Eva (Mrs. Geo. B.Heppner) of Abbotsford, B.C., and Elizabeth (Mrs. D. C. Schroeder) also of Abbotsford.

All her life our mother was fond of singing. She had stored the words of literally hundreds of hymns and songs in her memory. During her hours of intensest suffering these past weeks, the words of many came to sustain and comfort her. There were days when she writhed with pain, yet sang almost constantly - songs of salvation, of the Christian pilgrimage, songs of Heaven: "Erloeste Seel', bekenn' den Herrn" .. "Er nimmt die Schuld mir ab"... "Down at the cross where my Saviour died"... "I love Him far better than in days of yore; I'll serve Him more truly than ever before; I'll do as He bids me, whatever the cost; I'll be a true soldier, I'll die at my post."... 'Mut, harre auf den Morgen"... "Das ist meine Zuversicht"... "Have thine own way, Lord"... "Oh, I think of the home over there"... "Keiner wird zuschanden"... "Im Himmel ist kein Scheiden mehr..."

We thank God for a mother who made our spiritual welfare her main concern all our lives. We rejoice to know that with her to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. She is looking into the unveiled face of her Savior now. How could we wish it to be otherwise?

As family we wish to express our heartfelt thanks to all who eased her months of illness by visits in person, by card, or letter, and especially to those who prayed for her and us. We wish also to thank all who have evidenced their sympathy since her death. We deeply appreciate your thoughtfulness.

Gratefully, The Family

''Mennonite Brethren Herald'' obituary 1965 Mar 05 p. 18

Birth date: 1903 Sep 29

text of obituary:

<center><h3>GEORGE H. SUKKAU</h3></center>

George H. Sukkau, beloved husband and father of an only daughter, Irma, was born in South Russia (Terek), on September 29, 1903. Here he spent a happy childhood. His parents were Henry and Anna (nee Martens)Sukkau. In 1916 the family moved to the village of Waldheim (Molotschna) where he attended the elementary school. At the age of 16 he made peace with God and upon his confession of faith was baptized and received into the Rueckenauer MB Church some 4 years later. With his conversion he dedicated himself to his Master for service. It seemed quite natural that he should be called to the preaching ministry to which he was ordained in the Arnaud Mennonite Brethren Church in 1937. He completed his education later by attending the Winkler Bible School and graduating from Tabor College with a B.A. and Th.B degree.

In 1924 he was joined in matrimony to Lena Janzen with whom he was privileged to share 40 years and 6 months of loving marriage. Joys were doubled and sorrows divided because in every case they were shared jointly. The Lord gave them one daughter Irma, which made their circle even more complete. In 1924 the family emigrated to Canada, first to Markham Ontario, and one year later (in 1925) to Arnaud, Manitoba, where with other relatives they established a home and a Christian community. Here they spent some of their most blessed years.

In 1939 Mr. Sukkau was asked to teach in Yarrow Bible School, which after some deliberation he accepted as his God-appointed place, and which he filled for the next 14 years. This service was terminated by moving to South America where he also taught in the Mennonite Bible Schools for another 7 years. These were taxing but blessed years of service.

After his return from South America, Mr. Sukkau was entrusted with the Canadian MB Conference treasury. This gave a little more time for being at home and up to his decease he enjoyed this and other work entrusted to him. The family joined the Elmwood Church, where he had so many friends and coworkers. He served in the preaching ministry and in various committees in the church, always counting it a privilege.

Brother Sukkau enjoyed good health until last year. In December 1964 he submitted to a medical investigation, when he learned of his advanced malignancy. As always he wanted to know the truth and faced it with equinimity. Numerous details could be regulated and his departure was a triumph in his spiritual life.

He leaves to mourn his much too early departure, his wife, and one daughter, Irma, now in nurses training; one brother, Henry and family; one sister, Mrs D. Krueger and family; one Sister, Miss Annie Sukkau in Winnipeg and a number of relatives and a host of friends. They mourn, but not as such who have no hope. "The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord." Job 1:21.

On behalf of his church, we would add that Rev. Sukkau was a dependable, understanding minister of the gospel. He thought young with the young and could speak wisely to the older. His love was strong and his convictions were firm for his church and for the unadulterated teaching of the gospel. In his heart he had room for all Christians and his testimony rang clear and sound whether in his hearty singing, warm preaching, or thorough teaching. We bless his memory.
<center><h3>WESLEY B. PENNER</h3></center>

April 16, 1933 in Steinbach, Man., the son of Bernard D. and Anna (nee Giesbrecht) Penner. He received his elementary and secondary education in Steinbach and continued his advanced education, at United College, graduating with a B.A. degree in 1954. After a year in the teaching profession he followed his inclination to legal studies and entered law school, graduating with an L.L.B. and receiving a call to the bar in 1959. He joined the firm Newman, McLean and Associates with whom he later entered into partnership.

Wesley was reared in a Christian home and in 1950 made his personal commitment to Christ. Upon confession of faith and baptism he became a member of the EMB Church in Steinbach where he remained a member for 13 years. In 1963 he was married to Joyce Redekop and together with his wife joined the Elmwood Mennonite Brethren Church in Winnipeg. A son David Wesley, now 11 months, was born to this union.

Wesley Penner was able to make unique contributions to our people through his profession. Among the organizations to which he especially devoted his attention were MCC (Canada) during its incorporation, (Mennonite) Mutual Trust Company, the Canadian Mennonite and others. He earned the friendship and respect of his associates through his professional conduct and service.

Despite failing health over a period of a number of years the deceased could minimize his condition and appreciate the time God gave him in his work and with his family. For some time both he and his wife knew that his condition was serious. On Sunday morning, May 2, shortly after awakening, his heart failed and he answered his Maker's call. His life was well ordered when he died and his testimony left no doubt that he anticipated entry into a greater, life beyond. His wife and family reflected the testimony of Job: "The Lord gave, the Lord has taken away, blessed be the name of the Lord."

Mourning his passing are his wife, Joyce; a son, David Wesley; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bernard D. Penner; three sisters; a brother; his mother-in-law, Mrs. A. Redekop; and many friends and relatives.

The funeral was in the Elmwood Church, May 5, with I. W. Redekopp and C. Wilbert Loewen speaking.
<center><h3>REV. JOHN KEHLER</h3></center>

The death of Rev. John Kehler occured on June 13, 1962 in the City Hospital in Saskatoon. He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, three sons, one daugther, his parents, six brothers, and five sisters with their families and many friends.

Funeral services were held in the Saskatoon M.B. church on Saturday, June 16.

Mr. Kehler was born on March 19, 1906 in St. Jean Man. At an early age he accepted the Lord as his personal Savior and was baptized at the age of 13 and received into the fellowship of the M.B. church at Grossweide, Man. He attended Winkler Bible School and Winnipeg Bible Institute to prepare for the Lord's service. After graduation in 1939 he was married to Luella Enns on Oct. 22, of the same year. Their happy union was blessed with four children. Wesley, Larry, Renie and Doreen.

Mr. Kehler had a love for the people of Canada's Northland, and joyfuly served them with the gospel for almost ten years. This service took this family to God's Lake and Berens River Manitoba. He was in mission work at Fort Chipewyan, Alta., and one year he taught at La Ronge Indian Bible School. While serving the church at Woodrow, Sask., he was ordained. While pastoring the small group at Mildred, Sask., for five years, he also taught school in that district. He never lost the vision of the lost people in Canada's Northland. Even at the end of his life he expressed the desire to return there. When it became evident that his days were numbered, God gave him perfect peace in the consciousness that he would shortly go home to be with the Lord.

This wiki contains obituary indexes to Mennonite periodicals and local newspapers. We envision this, in the long run, as a site to centralize much of our biographical reference information. We would like to eventually enter information such as the entries from the 1940s ''Who's Who among the Mennonites'', our personal photos collection (including maybe scans of photos), notes indicating persons whose papers are in the archives, GRANDMA reference codes and ID numbers.

The wiki is not open to general editing; only a limited number of editors have user IDs. You can [mailto:mla@bethelks.edu contact us] with comments and corrections. Our intention is that each person is represented by only one page in the wiki, so please also report duplicate pages/persons.

Obviously, not all of the people mentioned in this wiki are Mennonites. Our site contains much local history information that goes beyond Mennonite circles.
You should see a "from=" as part of the browser. You can jump the alphabetical index to a particular point in the alphabet by changing the text after the from= to be the beginning of the part of the alphabet you want to look at. For example, "from=Wiens" will start the list at the beginning of the Wienses. (Note: women's maiden names don't appear in the alphabetical listing.)
