Mary Braun died Aug. 11, 2008. She was born Jan. 4, 1923 in Nikolayevka, Russia to Isaak and Katarina Braun. In 1929, the family travelled to Moscow to obtain documents to immigrate to Canada. They stayed in Germany for a period before settling in Sardis, B.C. Mary accepted Christ as Saviour at an early age and was baptized and became a member of the MB church. In her teens, Mary moved to the Maedchenheim (home for single girls working in the city) in Vancouver, where she did house-work for wealthy families. After working in a department store and as receptionist, Mary served with MCC, first at Boys' Village in the U.S., then as house manager in a home for travelling ministry workers. Predeceased by siblings Isaak, John, Katie, and Susan; Mary is mourned by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The celebration of life was Sept. 5 at Clearbrook MB Church, Abbotsford, B.C.

Hilda Toews died Aug. 14, 2008. She was born Aug. 11, 1918 near Maple Creek, Sask. to Bernhard and Elizabeth Penner. Hilda married Wilhelm (Bill) Toews Oct. 31, 1937. They lived in various places in Manitoba before retiring to B.C in 1977. Predeceased by Bill in 2005, son Edward, 1 granddaughter; Hilda is mourned by children Rose Janzen, Roberta (Rudy) Loewen, Lorna (Bev) Clark, Clifford, Hylda Gryba, Bill (Darlene), Jim (Sandra), Caroline (Bob) Seeley, Sharon Taevs, Bob (Joy), Jennifer (Wayne) Gryba, Lynda (Brent Searle); 34 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and 2 brothers. Cornelia (Nellie) Dahl died Aug. 27, 2008 from a severe stroke. She was born July 8, 1932 in Winnipeg to Bernhard and Liese Fast. She attended Mennonite Brethren Collegiate Institute and Mennonite Brethren Bible Coliege. In 1952, Nellie married Peter Dahl. Together, they operated a farm near Domain for 16 years. Moving back to Winnipeg, Nellie became involved in activities at Elmwood MB Church,working as swimming instructor and lifeguard at East Kildonan YMCA, and volunteering at the local MCC Self Help store. She also worked part-time as a Seniors' Activity Coordinator. Family took first place in Nellie's life, and she had an unwavering and uncomplicated faith. Nellie is mourned by Peter; children Carl and Irene; 6 grandchildren. The memorial service was Sept. 3 at Elmwood MB Church.

Elisabeth Penner died Sept. 7, 2008. She was born May 3, 1917 in Nieder-Chortitza, Ukraine. In 1943, the Penner family fled to Dresden, Germany. Sent to Yugoslavia, then returned to Germany, the family was captured by Soviets and sent to Siberia where they suffered cold, hunger, and the brutal control of the authorities. Elisabeth's father died of starvation in 1947. Elisabeth was bedridden for 4 years, unable to work. In 1955, she recovered and was able to provide food for her mother and herself. In 1966, Elisabeth's mother died and her 4 siblings living in Canada sponsored Elisabeth for immigration. She arrived in Canada in Sept. 1970, settling in Abbotsford, B.C Elisabeth became a Christian and was baptized. She attended services at Clearbrook MB Church as long as she was able. She is mourned by her brother Jakob and his wife; nieces and nephews. The memorial service was Sept. 11 at Clearbrook MB Church.

Margaretha (Margaret) Sawatzky died Dec. 31, 2007. She was born Dec. 25, 1910 in Nikolaithal, Ukraine to David and Elizabeth Peters. Margaret was baptized in 1929 and became a member of the Neu-Chortitza Mennonite Church. She moved with her family to Canada in 1930, where they settled in Gnadenthal, Man. Margaret became a member of Gnadenthal MB, then Winkler MB Church. In 1936, she married Franz G. Sawatzky. They had a son in 1937. Frank died of cancer in 1939. Margaret continued to operate the small mixed farm they had started until 1956 when she moved in with her son. Predeceased by Frank, Margaret is survived by her son Arthur. The memorial was Jan. 4, 2008 at Winkler (Man.) MB Church.

Helen Nickel died Aug. 8, 2008 at 101. She was born July 5, 1907 in Langham, Sask. to Jacob and Suzanna Nickel. Helen accepted the Lord as Saviour in 1924 and was baptized in the North Saskatchewan River, becoming a member of Ebenezer MB Church. Attending Bethany Bible School in Hepburn from 1928-1929 was one of the highlights of her life. In 1947, Helen moved to B.C. with her parents and two siblings. They made North Abbotsford MB Church (now Clearbrook MB) their spiritual .home. Helen was active in the ladies' fellowship, worked in gardens and canneries, and served as custodian at Columbia Bible College. Helen lived with her sister Mary after the death of their parents. Mary died in 1990 and Helen moved to Tabor Home in 1999. Predeceased by 6 siblings and 1 niece; Helen is mourned by 2 sisters-in- law; 22 nieces and nephews; 50 grand-nieces and nephews, and 45 great-grandnieces and nephews. The memorial service was Aug. 18 at Clearbrook MB Church.

Agnes (Aggie) Martens died June 17, 2008. She was born in Altona, Man. to John and Margaret Goerz. She made a commitment to follow Jesus at an early age and was baptized and got involved in her local church in Virgil, Ont. She attended Winkler Bible School, where she met David Martens whom she married in 1973. The couple settled in Brandon, Man., where Aggie served as a guide for Pioneer Girls, and as a youth leader, teacher, caregiver, and musician at church. For 21 years, she worked as receptionist for H&R Block during the winter months. Aggie enjoyed helping run the family farm, playing piano, suntanning, and travelling to southern gospel concerts. Predeceased by 1 brother; Aggie is mourned by David; children Randy (Mandi), Julie (Noah); 3 grand-children; her father; 5 siblings. The celebration of Aggie's life was June 23 at Richmond Park MB Church.

Maria Penner died Aug. 1, 2008. She was born Sept. 25, 1908 in Paulsheim, Ukraine to David and Maria Boese. Maria was converted in 1929, baptized the same year, and became a member of the church. The Lord was her refuge in spite of the arrest of ministers and closure of churches a few years later. Maria married Peter Penner in 1934. They had one daughter before Peter was arrested and exiled in 1937, and died in 1944. In 1943, the family fled the U.S.S.R. Maria's father died on the journey. Sojourning in Poland for one year, Germany for one year, the Netherlands for two years, Maria, her mother, and her daughter went to Canada, first joining Maria's brother in Tofield, Alta., then moving to Yarrow, B.C. where they joined Yarrow MB Church. After her mother's death, Maria's sister Greta moved to Canada and lived with her. Maria and Greta moved to Abbotsford in 1996, joining Clearbrook MB Church. After Greta's death in 2005, Maria moved to Menno Home. Maria is survived by daughter Elvira (Duane) Boneham. The memorial was Aug. 7 at Clearbrook MB Church.

self-educated, skilled at planning programs,
and interested in poetry and music. She
helped others in many ways. Precedeased by
her husband, 8 siblings; she is mourned by
son Arthur Frank; 2 sisters; 2 sisters-in-law;

Susan learned about Jesus,
prayed for forgiveness, and
found assurance in Isaiah 43:1. In her teens, she
was baptized and accepted into membership at
Coaldale MB Church. After high school, Susan
studied at the local Bible school. She became a
teacher, enjoying 35 years in her chosen profession.
She also taught Sunday school. Susan travelled to
Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Australia. A
very difficult time in Susan's life was the declining
health of her sister Margaret. Susan was blessed
with good health and many supportive nieces
and nephews. She is mourned by 24 nieces and
nephews and their families. The funeral was Aug.
16 at Coaldale (Alta.) MB Church.

Katharina "Tina"
Rempel died Sept. 3,
2008 at 100. She was
born May 3, 1908 in
Waldheim, Ukraine
to Tobias and Maria
Ewert. Katharina came
to faith at a revival service. At 17, she
was baptized on the confession of her
faith and received into membership at
Waldheim MB Church. Young people's
meetings and singing in choirs brought
her joy in spite of hard times. In 1928,
Katharina and her siblings immigrated
to Canada. Settling first in Winnipeg,
Katharina met Henry Rempel in Kitchener,
Onto in 1933 . They were married in 1937.
Katharina was a member of the women's
group and choir at Kitchener MB Church,
and sang in a choir at the local hospital.
Henry and Katharina cultivated friendly
contact with the local General Conference
Mennonite church to help reconcile the
streams of Mennonitism. Henry died in
1977. In 1983, Katharina moved to Tabor
Manor in St. Catharines, Ont., where she
regularly called on bedridden residents,
wrote letters, and kept a diary. She is
mourned by children Henry, Rita Brown,
John; 3 grandchildren; 1 great-grandson.

Arthur "Art" Koehn
died peacefully at
home July 29, 2008.
He was born June 29,
1931 in Blumenhoff,
Sask. In 1937, his family
moved to Vauxhall, Alta. Art accepted the
Lord as Saviour at 14 and was baptized in
the MB church. Art joined the Bank of Nova
Scotia and worked in branches throughout Alta., Sask., and B.C. While working
in Saskatoon, he met Helen Loewen, and
they were married Aug. 14, 1965. After 35
years with Scotiabank, he retired in 1986,
though he worked on the maintenance
crew at Sears until he fully retired in 1996.
Art loved carpentry, working in his yard
and garden, and travelling. He was actively
involved in every church he attended. Art
was diagnosed with cancer in 2003. He
was a loving and caring husband, father,
and grandfather who will be missed for
his quiet strength and presence. His gentle
kindness led him to lend a hand wherever
needed. Predeceased by 1 sister and 1
infant brother, Art is mourned by Helen;
daughters Julie Brooks (Glenn) and Sandra
Koehn; 2 grandchildren; and 6 siblings.

Arthur "Art" Koehn
died peacefully at
home July 29, 2008.
He was born June 29,
1931 in Blumenhoff,
Sask.ln 1937, his family
moved to Vauxhall, Alta. Art accepted the
Lord as Saviour at 14 and was baptized in
the MB church. Art joined the Bank of Nova
Scotia and worked in branches through-
out Alta., Sask., and B.c. While working
in Saskatoon, he met Helen Loewen, and
they were married Aug. 14, 1965. After 35
years with Scotiabank, he retired in 1986,
though he worked on the maintenance
crew at Sears until he fully retired in 1996.
Art loved carpentry, working in his yard
and garden, and travelling. He was actively
involved in every church he attended. Art
was diagnosed with cancer in 2003 . He
was a loving and caring husband, father,
and grandfather who will be missed for
his quiet strength and presence. His gentle
kindness led him to lend a hand wherever
needed. Predeceased by 1 sister and 1
infant brother, Art is mourned by Helen;
daughters Julie Brooks (Glenn) and Sandra
Koehn; 2 grandchildren; and 6 siblings.

Roland Marsch died
July 17, 2008. He was
born Jan. 14, 1938 in
Schwelm, Germany,
to Christian and Rahel
Marsch. The fact that his
parents "dragged me
to every evangelistic campaign possible"
was the foundation of his relationship with
Jesus. In 1958, having completed an agricultural apprenticeship, Roland immigrated to
Canada with the intention of becoming a
farmer. After several attempts to rent land
of his own failed, he decided to attend
Coaldale Bible School, where he met Lorina
Hubert. They were married June 23, 1962.
Roland graduated from MB Bible College,
Winnipeg, and ministered in Canada, and
then Germany, after the congregation chose
Roland by lot to be their pastor. Roland
and Lorina returned to Winnipeg to pastor
North Kildonan MB Church. During this time
he graduated from Providence Theological
Seminary. Roland served as conference
minister for the Canadian Conference from
1986-1990. He pastored at Portage Avenue
MB Church until 1997 when Roland and
Lorina heard God's call to Dresden, Germany.
Two years of ministry followed at the end of
which they returned to Winnipeg, where
Lorina died of a brain tumor. Roland married
Irene Loewen in 2000 and spent the following 6 years as pastor at North Kildonan
MB Church. Roland's ministry ended with a
diagnosis of cancer in 2007. Predeceased by
Lorina and 1 sister; Roland is mourned by
Irene; children Bob (Hilde), Susan (Walter)
Jakobeit, Judy (Peter) von Kampen; 11
grandchildren; 3 siblings. The funeral was
July 22 at North Kildonan MB Church.

joined the MB church in Vauxhall. His faith
in Jesus was central to his life and work. In
1943, Henry married Agatha Bergen during
a raging blizzard. He attended Winkler Bible
School and Winnipeg Bible College, accompanied by wife and children. In 1952, he was
ordained a minister. He farmed in Vauxhall,
and served as a minister in the church. The
stories he used to illustrate the truths of his
sermons are still recalled by many. Agatha
died in 1984. In 1989, Henry married Sally
Bergen. She died in 2005. Henry is mourned
by children Hertha (Irwin) Warkentin,
Elfreda (Peter) Nickel, Ernie (Joyce) Unruh,

family left Russia under cover of night. John
grew up on the family farm in Coaldale,
Alta. and studied at Prairie Bible Institute.
During WWII, he served as a conscientious
objector, constructing roads around Jasper
and welding at the Vancouver shipyards.
In 1945, he married Mary Nickel. For two
years they filled the roles of schoolteacher,
preacher, and medical personnel for the
First Nation reserve at Little Grand Rapids,
Man., as missionaries for the United Church
of Canada. Then, John studied at Mennonite
Brethren Bible College, Winnipeg, from
where he was invited, in 1950, to become
director of The Gospel Light Hour, a radio
program later called MB Communications
and today, Family Life Network. He worked
with great joy and zeal in the radio ministry
for 13 years, adding more English programs
and launching the High German, Low
German, and Russian programs. He enjoyed
new beginnings, and pastored in several
churches. Both John and Mary eagerly
helped those in need. John's boldness in
sharing his faith led many people to pray
with him to accept Jesus. He remained full
of hope in the trials of life. After Mary died,
John published his memoir, called The Lord's
Donkey. In 1994, he married Olga Dueck.
He is mourned by Olga; children Elly Dyck
(Edgar), Linda Koop (Walt), Dorothy Siebert
(Harold), Ed, Shirley Schmidt (Wally), John
(Janice), and Grace Penner (Marv); Olga's

friends, travelling, attending conferences,
and visiting the elderly. On May 5, 2007,
she married George Petkau. In winter
2008, Ella experienced a re-occurrence of
cancer. Predeceased by an infant brother
and 1 sister; Ella is mourned by George,
his children Grace (David) Loewen, John
(Barb) Petkau, Judy (Tom) Penner, Kathy
(Rick) Penner, Gerald (Andrea) Petkau; 12
