Martyrs Mirror Images
This is intended as a reference set of the Jan Luiken (1649-1712) etchings in the Martyrs Mirror. These aren't intended to be high enough quality for print or other reproduction. The idea is to make it easier to find particular images and get an overview of the set.
These were scanned directly out of a copy of the 1685 edition. You'll find some skewing of the images from vertical alignment, because in the book itself they weren't necessarily perfectly aligned. There is also quite a bit of bleed-through from the opposite side of the page in some cases.
There has been some discrepancy in counting the number of illustrations in the 1685 edition. The Mennonite Encyclopedia article "Martyrs' Mirror" (vol. 3, pp. 527-529, by Nanne van der Zijpp and Harold S. Bender) refers to 103 illustrations (p. 528), 49 in part 1 and 54 in part 2, but later on the same page refers to 105 illustrations. Several other studies (Gerald C. Studer, "A History of the Martyrs' Mirror," Mennonite Quarterly Review 22 (July 1948): 170; John S. Oyer and Robert S. Kreider, Mirror of the Martyrs (Intercourse, PA: Good Books, 1990), 7; Jan Gleysteen, The Drama of the Martyrs (Lancaster, PA: Mennonite Historical Associates, 1975), 22) cite the correct number: 104 (49 in part 1, 55 in part 2).
Gleysteen's book, however, which reproduces the etchings, actually includes 115 illustrations. Although he does not make it entirely clear, the extra 11 illustrations come from an edition apparently published in 1698 containing only the etchings--the original 104 plus an additional 11 by Luiken which have been called "of lesser quality" (Oyer-Kreider, p. 91 note 4): Theater des martyrs = Schau-Buhne der Martyrer: depuis la mort J. Christ jusqú à present: représenté en tres belles tailles-douces (Leyde: Pierre vander Aa, 1698-1738?). (#8410 in the Nelson Springer Mennonite Bibliography). This volume seems to have gotten little consideration in previous studies of the Martyrs' Mirror. See, however, James W. Lowry, "Martyrs' Mirror Picture Albums and Abridgements: A Surprising Find," Pennsylvania Mennonite Heritage 25:4 (October 2002): 2-8.
This web page includes only the etchings from the 1685 edition. The size of the originals in that edition is about 14 x 11 cm or 5.5 x 4.5 inches.
The definitive catalog of Luiken's work is P. van Eeghen, Het Werk van Jan en Casper Luyken (Amsterdam: Frederik Muller, 1905).
The brief captions listed here come from several sources: the original 1685 edition, Gleysteen's Drama (which draws its captions from the 1698 version), and Eeghen. These sources do not always agree.
According to Oyer and Kreider, 30 of the original plates have survived, 23 owned by the Martyrs Mirror Trust and the other 7 in private hands. Which 30 of the images are found on the surviving plates is not known to me.
Dirk Willems is book 2, page 387, Eeghen 736.
