In 1950 the Board of Christian Service came into existence when the Peace Committee, the Emergency Relief Board, and the Board of Mutual Aid were merged. The reorganization took place in connection with the adoption of a new constitution by the General Conference. The Board of Christian Service continued until 1968 when another reorganization of the General Conference took place. In 1969 most of the Board's functions were placed under the Commission on Home Ministries.
